Something happened. Read this first.

A large amount of money is now yours, or is about to be. You feel the pressure to act. Here is the truth that pressure is hiding: almost nothing about a windfall is genuinely urgent, and the most powerful thing you can do right now is slow down.

The first moves, in order

1. Do nothing, on purpose

Secure any physical claim document. Leave any money that has landed exactly where it is. Do not move it, invest it, or sign anything. The jangling urge to act is your nervous system, not your situation. The money is not going anywhere.

2. Tell almost no one

Telling is the one decision you can never undo. Keep the circle as small as you possibly can, especially early. Silence is not secrecy. It is the single most protective move available to you.

3. Understand what is actually yours

Before you plan or promise anything, find out what remains after tax. Build on the real, after-tax number, never the headline. This is a job for a qualified tax professional.

4. Build a team before you spend a dime

You want a small group of independent professionals who are legally obligated to act in your interest: a fee-only fiduciary advisor, an estate attorney, and an accountant. Do not hand everything to one person, however much you trust them.

5. Guard it, do not grow it

You have already won. The fastest way to lose a windfall is trying to grow it fast. Aim for a boring, secure, lasting fortune, not an exciting one.
